PENS ALERT: Pens fall to Wings 3-1. GOAL: E.MALKIN(13). STARS: 3)J.ABDELKADER 2)V.FILPPULA 1)C.OSGOOD. Game 3 TUE in PGH.

it's not over

And if you even remotely think it is... you're no kind of fan.

Sure, I felt like crap after that game ended last night, but after rewatching the highlights on the NHL network this morning, I'm not feeling so bad. Mostly because 2 of those goals that Detroit got, were purely flukes, one bumped off Fleury's leg, the other unwittingly bumped in by his backside.

So.

The fact that game 2 is tonight is a very good thing in my opinion. Get back up on that horse and show them who'd boss. I've got my faith renewed in this team.

Let's do it.

Cup finals tonight, game on!

Photobucket

Not much left to be said, anyone who is anyone... and that's not me... has speculated and respeculated this series from every possible angle before it was even officially a series.

Game time is only a few hours away, and if you're like myself you've been waiting for it to start since Tuesday. So yeah... let's get it started already! :D

Be wary Penguins fans, there are already those who are voting against us to win this, and some of these people are our own kind! DON'T listen to such utter nonsense!

There is no reason this team cannot win this title!

the Penguins Conspiracy theory

Ok, first off if you don't have a clue as to just what 'conspiracy' theory I'm speaking of, chances are you you either wouldn't believe it anyway, or just don't listen to as much hockey stuff as I do. So in that regard, let me fill you in.

There are a select few out there, and honestly, more than a few, I'm just trying to keep this on the light side folks, that think for what ever reason, the NHL in all it's great powers have purposely done one of two things. One being only slightly more believeable than the other.

The first, and most absurd of the two, is that league head honcho Gary Bettman and the whole of the NHL got together and pushed the Pittsburgh Penguins thru to the finals again, to rematch the Detroit Red Wings, all in the name of ratings. I'm serious, some guy said that on the radio. It was one of those moments while driving you literally say out loud to yourself.. "WTF?"

Obviously this person lives in some sort of bizaro world. When (if ever) have you been able to get 3 or more people together and had everyone agree on one thing, let alone a whole league of hockey players, officials, team management, etc? All that said, if you even remotely entertain the thought that it's even possible, you need to seriously seek some sort of counseling, because you're delusional.

Theory number two, though not as far fetched as number one, is still out there floating around on the radio waves, and the vastness of Al Gore's interwebs. It being that the league purposely put the first two games of the Stanley Cup finals back to back on Saturday and Sunday night to give the Penguins the advantage over a rather beaten up Red Wings team.

Please. You know where this is all going to lead, don't you? Let's say the Penguins pull off the ultimate win, and take Lord Stanley's cup for their very own. Personally I'll be one happy Pens fan, but as an aside, you'll hear a collective cry from somewhere over Michigan of Dead Wing fans calling a party foul.

"They won because we were hurt and not 100%"... they're gonna say it, mark my words. And it will spread faster than those Bugs Bunny cartoons where they leave the trail of gunpowder.

Again, how people come up with ideas like this is anyones guess. Oh wait... I got it, I think it's a little thing called jelousy, mixed with a little bit of hate. The green monster is just too much for some people to ignore.

Suffice to say the only people who give consideration to any of this horse poop are those that don't like Pittsburgh, or Sidney Crosby, and want to see them lose. For me, I think revenge is a dish best served ice cold, and with a slap shot in the back of the net, followed by a rich dessert eaten out of Lord Stanley's sacred chalice. Just make sure it's been cleaned well since Chris Drapier had it, that's all.

I got my second dose of mini fame (in my own head, and no where else!) by getting to talk live on the War Room on XM radio this morning. I'll say it again and again... I LOVE THOSE GUYS! They are my 11am Monday thru Friday fix.

And last up, another one of my favorites, Sean Leahy, formerly of Going Five Hole, wrote an awesome article for Puck Daddy about the superstions of touching the conference trophy's. I have to reiterate what others have said, if it's good enough for the likes of Mario and Yzerman to touch, why not?

Typically I'm not a superstitious person, but I do find since I bought that area rug with the Pens logo on it back last fall, I totally avoid stepping on the logo, and try to quickly run the sweeper over it, lol. So maybe I'm only hockey superstitious? Ahh well, it's all good. :)

Two more days and the finals are on it Detroit! Schedule, schmedule... we're doing it!

Back to the Stanley Cup Finals

Photobucket

But first, the Prince of Wales Trophy for the Eastern Conference Champion, the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Photobucket

The fact that Sidney Crosby took hold of the trophy shocked the hell out of me, but I must say as soon as he did it, I knew why, and sure enough I was right.

"We didn't touch (the trophy) last year, and things didn't go the way we wanted," Crosby said. "I thought we'd change it up this year."

Photobucket

All that's left now is for the outcome of the Western Conference finals, and the way that's looking, the Pens may once again be taking on the Red Wings. I personally had chosen waaaaaay back at the beginning of the playoffs for a Blackhawks / Penguins final... but, meh.

Serving up sweet justice on Marian Hossa might be nice though, dontcha think? But no pontificating just yet, we'll wait on the result of that series first.

And if you're looking for your daily dose of hockey and Penguins related LOL's, go check out the Pensblog's recap of last nights game. Just don't be drinking while reading, or you'll be needing to clean off your monitor. :)

The waiting game

So, a happy Memorial day to everyone.

Somewhere in this abundant sunshine there is still hockey going on, at least I think so. Two days off since the last game before the Penguins play again tomorrow night, and a rather non entertaining game yesterday with the Red Wings soundly taking the Blackhawks to the carpet.

Seriously, I was so hoping the Western conference finals was going to be more of a series than it has been. So much for that I suppose, and as it is, unless something freakish happens ( and not to say things such as that don't happen ) Pittsburgh will eventually, if not tomorrow, sometime with in the Eastern conference finals, take the East title for the second straight year and return to the Stanley Cup finals.

In and of itself, unprecidented. Why? The loser from the previous year never comes back to the finals again. Mark my words, you'll hear that little dity a few times in the coming weeks.

Weeks? Yes, weeks.

In all their infinite wisdom (note sarcasm) the NHL has stated that if both Conference finals were over by Tuesday the 26th, (and as it is, the date this was released, it was already an impossibility with Chicagos win on Thursday night) that the cup finals would start on May 29th. And, if not, they would not start until June 5th.

WHAT? a 10 day break? Unheard of and for all I care, unnecessary. I can't say I've heard the reasoning behind all of this, but you can bet your bottom dollar... well, that it comes down to the bottom dollar, someones.

Whether this is some television or league necessity isn't really relevant. The point is, would any other sport do this? Heck no. So why is the NHL letting/doing this? Certainly the excuse can't be made that it's to help hype the sport in the week up until it starts? This isn't like the Super Bowl where you have a week off before it starts. The Super Bowl is a one shot game, winner take all, and hey.. guess what? When the football season starts they already know when their championship game is.

So, whateveh...

Tomorrow, Pens and 'Canes.... storm warning has been canceled!!

Pens take game 1

Not to get ahead of ourselves, but if you like myself are feeling good today about yesterdays win against the Hurricanes, go ahead and enjoy, relish the victory, but only briefly.

I mean, come on... this thing just started, and just about anything is possible. But that's not to say one cannot enjoy the feeling of a good, solid win.

The fact that two of the Penguins goals came from unlikely sources, Philippe Boucher and Miroslav Satan is good to see. Adding in Evgeni Malkin's sweet goal and it made for a nice 3-2 win.

Ok if you were a little nervous for that last two minutes, that's perfectly ok too... I think we all were.

Marc-Andre Fleury's play last night just showed what he is capable of. It was a true goaltenders match up.

And in case you missed it... news flash... the Staal's are brothers!

POWER TO THE PENGUINS!!!

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, finally here!

Photobucket

So here we go. Can you even remember 12 months ago being in this same spot with the Penguins? I remember being at game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Flyers. But wow.. that seems a lifetime ago.

There has been alot happen to the Penguins in that year. Losing the Cup, losing alot of games, and even losing a coach.

But having gained so much more. A little respect, thank you, for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Sure, by the middle of February alot of folks had written the Pens off as a fluke from last year who wouldn't even make the playoffs this year, let alone the conference final. Yet, there they are.

Of course time will tell just how far the Penguins will progress, and if they'll make a return visit to Lord Stanley's dance. Tonight though, it all starts against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carolina's goalie, Cam Ward has been hot, yet the Hurricanes have had to go 7 games in their first two rounds of the playoffs. So it remains to be seen what sort of a scoring challenge they'll be against Fluery. Sure, Eric Staal is a sharp shooter in his own right, but the Pens also have Crosby and Malkin on their side.

Granted the Pens and Canes are not rivals at this point, but who is to say by the end of this series they aren't!

Game time is coming up, so time to get your gear on and get ready!

Photobucket

Ok, taking my own advice here. Keeping it simple.

Everyone knows what needs to be done, and they need to do it now. The Penguins are fighting for their playoff lives tonight in the home of the trash throwers. Time to win this series and move on to the next round.

Are the rumors of Gonch's return true? We'll see that as well.

Gonchar out for tonights game

From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.com:

The Penguins have recalled defenseman Alex Goligoski from their farm team in Wilkes-Barre, and he is scheduled to be in the lineup for Game 5 of their second-round playoff series against Washington tonight at 7:08 p.m. at the Verizon Center.

He will replace defenseman Sergei Gonchar, whose right knee was injured on a hit by Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin during the first period of the Penguins' 5-3 victory in Game 4 at Mellon Arena last night. Ovechkin was assessed only a two-minute tripping minor for the hit, and Washington officials said that as of late this morning he had not had a hearing with league officials.

The extent of Gonchar's injury has not been announced, but he accompanied the team here last night. He was wearing a large black support on his right knee at the team hotel today.

Pens vs. Caps, game 5 tonight

Photobucket

I'm starting to wonder, despite Ted Leonis's comments that us "'Yinz" love our towels, that maybe tonight at the Verizon Center, the Capitals shouldn't be passing out their own, heavy duty version, as there has been a whole lot of crying and whining going on in their dressing room... and hey, that's when they were winning. Who knows what's going down now.

Of course the only news that was bigger last night then the fact that goalie phenom for the Caps, Simeon Varlamov, is actually indeed human after all, and not a robot, is the dirty first period knee on knee hit from Alex Ovechkin on Sergi Gonchar.

The fact that Gonch looks like he's being screwed down into the ice he was hit and spun so hard in and of itself should have made the on ice official at the very least consult with his fellow officials, how that can be even be interpreted as tripping is anyones guess.

You be the judge:

Clearly not a trip in my opinion. But oddly a few after game comments from the Penguins, courtesy of the WashingtonPost.com:

"That's three games in a row where he's out there trying to hurt guys," said Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik. "You just watch the way he hits. And I love the way he plays ... but he could get a charging penalty every time he hits. He leaves his feet, and takes countless strides. We've gotten lucky up to this point. And he likes to target the Russian guys, for some reason.

"Everyone likes to play hard, and play physical," Orpik added. "But there's a line you can't cross, and a lot of guys in our room felt like the last couple games he was taking shots where he was trying to hurt guys."

Rob Scuderi added: "It's tough. You want instant retribution. You want a big hit, catch him with his head down, knock him out across the middle, something like that. But it doesn't do you any good. That's your first snap thought but after a couple seconds you calm yourself down and you realize the best place to hurt them is one the scoreboard."

And that they did. But had this been a 5 minute major, the Penguins could have kept on that power play until it ran out. But, whateveh... the Pens won so I won't try to get to picky about the end result, but had they lost, I'd be hotter than I was last night after this went down.

The wonderful end to this game aside, and it was a great end, punishing the Capitals, their rookie goalie, and Ovie himself. Holding him to less than spectacular stats.

What happens next? It remains to be seen the status of Gonchar. But what of the status of Alex "the great"? Will the high and mighty Colin Campbell dole out fair punishment? If I had to be honest with myself, and I do try to be, nothing is going to happen to him. At the very most he'll get a fine, and when it gets right down to it, he should. But don't hold out for even that to happen.

I listen to a local talk radio show from time to time, and the one host talks about how "better people should be treated better". Sometimes when I hear him say that it really irks me. Who are these better people, other than the fact they are someone with more money, status, etc. And why do they deserve better treatment?

To think this doesn't trickle down into the world of hockey would be naive. Being a Penguins fan, many a time I've heard that Sidney Crosby gets prefered treatment by the NHL. Maybe he does in some regards, but what folks don't look at when they are outside the Pittsburgh market, Sid didn't ask for any of this. He was proclaimed 'the next one' by the Great One himself, and the marketing folks at the NHL picked up and ran with it, the poor kid never had a chance to show himself for what he was.

So now, we have the Crosby haters wailing that Sid didn't get suspended for the hit to the family jewels on the Atlanta Thrashers player in the regular season. I'm sorry, this knee on knee hit was totally different, and tell me if I'm biased I don't give a flying fig. But we'll forget Sid for a second, what about Malkin? He got fined for the elbow to the head he delivered before the end of the season.

Oh yeah, the referee making this call? Same dude who blew the whistle in the Red Wings - Ducks game when he 'lost sight of the puck'. Special.

I say, don't suspend Ovechkin, but at the very least fine the freak. He got off easy with his two minute 'tripping' penalty.

Anyhow, this being a back to back two games, it should be interesting to see who benefits more. I'd have to say I hope the Penguins do since they are coming off that sweet 5-2 win.

One last little nugget of encouragement. The Caps have won only one of their seven playoff meetings with the Pensguins. As well, Pittsburgh is 7-0 all time in Game 5's, including 3-0 in Game 5's in Washington. Just thought I'd share that :)

Must win # 2, tonight Game 4 at home

Photobucket

With more drama than a cheap romance novel ( c'mon, death threats made by a 17 year old to Alex Ovechkin? ) the next game in the Penguins and Capitals playoff semifinals is on for tonight at the Mellon Arena.

A person didn't have to go to far thru the internet hockey websites yesterday to find all kinds of whining, and moaning by the Caps and their red masses, or for that matter tons of praises and accolades for Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. And those were deserving, the whining... eh, you be your own judge.

The game Weds. night was a nail biter to the end, mostly because if you were like myself you thought the Pens had it in the bag after that Malkin goal in the third. Ney, ney, my friend... how dare we get so complacent in our hockey lives? This is playoff hockey, and I should know well enough by now every player steps up their game just a little bit more.

And Kris Letang was proof positive of that fact. Long ago I went back on my initial opinion on Letang. At first when he came to the Pens, I thought he was arrogant and just not humble enough to develop into the potential he had. I was wrong, and happily so. This guy has a bright future for himself in the NHL.

Between him, Gonchar, and Orpik, I like that our defense has solid roots. Scuderi, Gill, and Eaton also have been major contributers in their own right, Eaton even having 2 of his own playoff goals.

Myself, I'd like to see a little more scoring and less puck stops, but I will give the Caps rookie goaltender his due (I don't feel for going to look for the correct spelling of that name, my apologies!) he's amazing. What is it with these Russian phenoms that don't speak a lick of English?

Power play... that's been said, resaid, said again, and left unsaid... and it still needs to get going. If the Penguins make it past this round, and even to the finals again, there is no way you can win against a Detroit or Ducks team with a power play that broken.

Tonights game is going to be the start of a back to back. Tomorrow they'll be playing in Washington... all this done to appease the mighty telivison schmoes. Special.

Anyhow, put your Penguins gear on, get your towel ready (and yeah Ted Leonis, we love our towels, screw) and make sure the cat is not in your favorite chair, because we have Penguins hockey tonight!

A must win at the Mellon tonight

Photobucket

There is definitely not alot left to be said. Game 3 is a definite must win for the Penguins tonight. Being down 2 games to the Caps, means the Pens would still have to win 4 of 5 remaining games.

Hey, I'm not saying it can't be done. This team has proven that if anyone can do that it's them, but it's not going to be easy.

And for the life of me I just can't figure any of this out. The Penguins offense is greater than that of the Craps, so they should ... can.. do better than what they have.

Do we need to put Evgeni Malkin on a milk carton? Please, I hope not.

Semifinal Game 2 in Washingtom

Photobucket

Ok, forget game 1... it's over. We lost, acknowledge and move on.

Tonight, the Penguins need to come out with the intensity they did in the first period of the last game, keeping the puck down in the Caps end of the rink, and yes.. of course... score. Also keep that up for the whole 60 minutes, not giving them a break. The Capitals seriously looked lost when the Pens played them hard, and kept shooting at their net.

The power play... gosh I can't believe I'm saying this yet again... needs to be better than it was in game 1, hell all season. Players like Chris Kunitz and Bill Guerin who were meant to fill a vacancy and need, have to step up and score like they were when the Penguins first acquired them. This can not all fall on Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin... not that Geno was very obvious in the first game, but he's since promised to step up his game tonight. Let's hope so.

The Pens in DC... game 1

Photobucket

Well after a week off from playing, the Penguins are finally ready today to go head to head against the Capitals in their second round of the playoffs. Shame you'll have to watch it on NBC... *le sigh*

Ha... my first read this morning, and my apologies to thePensblog for this as they usually are my first hockey stop of the day, but my internet connection what it was/is while I was waiting for it to load I was reading Puck Daddy. Here are his Seven hopes for the Crosby vs. Ovechkin showdown, good reading. My personal fav... #7.

We'll take some goals like this... if the Caps are willing...

And on an even lighter note.....

"When I gave my name to the girl who was taking my information, there was a pause, and then she said, 'Sorry, but after looking at your ticket-purchasing history, it is obvious you are a Penguins fan,' " Ignatius said.

" 'Mr. Leonsis has given us orders not to sell tickets to Penguins fans.' "

Ignatius' response?

"I told her to thank Mr. Leonsis for paying me and the multitude of Pens fans who have filled the Capital Centre and Verizon Center over the years this great compliment."

-Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.com

And just what would they be afraid of? Maybe too many Pens fans make the other folks in the crowd nervous? Or like the last time that Pittsburgh was in the Caps barn it almost sounded like they were playing in the Mellon?

Because it's been mentioned about a gazillion times since it was announced this meeting of the NHL's great would take place, I'm going to refrain from mentioning the fact that it's Crosby-Malkin-Ovechkin...

With an hour left to game time, if you're not excited yet, well... you probably wouldn't be reading this anyway. All the hype and contemplation on who is better will soon be forgotten as battle tested players face off to see who will ultimately take home the bragging rights to who is actually 'the best'.

So... here we go Pens fans... let's do this, and do it good.....
